G’day, I am Ida. I work in construction full time and an enthusiastic cook on weekends. I am a Malaysian born foodie who has been calling Australia home for almost 20 years.
I enjoy feeding my friends and family. To do so, I am constantly on the lookout for fresh, seasonal ingredients and turn them into delectable meals. I am a lover of all things related to food, cute socks, crime shows, fluffy soft toys, traveling and enamel wares (making appearances here … occasionally).
After toying with the idea of starting a food blog for a better part of a decade, I finally took the plunge after my dear mom was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. This blog serves as a love letter to my mom; as her food and her outlook on life has had a profound effect on me. This is my way of keeping our memories alive. My mom was a cook for 50 years prior to retirement. Like me, many children in Malaysia grew up eating her food. It is safe to say when I tell people that my mother is the ‘best cook’, I am always met with a resounding YES from others who have had the pleasure of eating her food.
I also started this blog for another personal reason. Having migrated to Australia in my teens, I had to learn to cook my own food. I went from being cash strapped international student to a time-poor corporate slave but one thing has never changed; my love for cooking. I want to share with others my kitchen adventures creating honest, healthy and quick dishes at home. Through these adventures, I don’t only learn how to make good-value meals, along the way I also managed to pick up some practical tips and hacks to make life easier in the kitchen. I hope to use my knowledge and experiences to make your time in the kitchen rewarding too.
I describe the food that I make as ‘simple – happy food’. If I have to call it something, it would be Modern Australian; with plenty of Asian & European influence. The recipes featured here consist of family favourites that bring joy and significance to me, my family, friends and my culture. I also showcase recipes inspired by my travel experiences.
My food philosophy is ‘easy and wholesome’. I swear by getting the best possible ingredients one can afford as well as enjoying seasonal yields. At the same time, I embrace amazing products created to make my time in the kitchen a breeze- so you will find store bought short cut items such as pastry, frozen veggies & sauces! There’s no shame in using them! I am also a big believer in buying local and supporting small businesses. I am lucky that in Australia, I am surrounded by the freshest, world-class produce. This belief is reaffirmed through years of traveling and is something I will never take for granted.
